What are DOT Physicals?

• Every commercial motor vehicle driver requires regular physical examinations as per the Federal law. These exams are referred to as “Department of Transportation Medical Examinations.” DOT physicals are highly essential for the safety of the drivers.
• DOT physical examinations can detect the physical and mental issues. DOT medical examiners are specially trained to understand regulations and prevent drivers from inappropriate disqualification by conducting DOT physical examination.
• Only a licensed medical examiner listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry is eligible to conduct DOT physical examinations.
• The term includes, but is not limited to, Doctors of Chiropractic (DC), Doctors of Medicine (MD), Doctors of Osteopathy (DO), Physician Assistants (PA), and Advanced Practice Nurses (APN). A DOT physical exam is valid for up to 24 months.
• The medical examiner may also issue a medical examiner's certificate for less than 24 months when it's desirable to monitor a condition, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
